Under the terms of the Primary School Transport Scheme, only eligible children qualify for free transport. In order to be eligible, children must live at least 3.2 kilometres from, and be attending, their nearest national school as determined by my Department. Bus Éireann, which operates the school transport scheme, on behalf of my Department, have advised that the pupil referred to by the Deputy, in the details supplied, resides 1.9 kms from the school of attendance and is therefore not eligible for free school transport. Pupils who reside less than 3.2 kilometres from their school of eligibility may avail of fare-paying concessionary transport to that school, provided there are spare seats on an existing service and they pay the annual charge. Concessionary pupils from families with valid medical cards are not exempt from this charge.
