The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) is a Trans-Atlantic intergovernmental organisation with 28 members drawn from Europe and North America. The introduction to the NATO Treaty specifically states that "The Parties to this Treaty reaffirm their faith in the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and their desire to live in peace with all peoples and all governments". Since the early 1990s, cooperation between NATO and the United Nations has broadened significantly, and in September 2008, the two organisations established a framework for expanded consultation and cooperation between them. NATO has been mandated by the United Nations Security Council on various occasions to undertake operations on its behalf to maintain international peace and security.
