Question 328: To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied that the enforcement of food labelling is sufficiently stringent to protect the integrity of the food production sector here and throughout the European Union; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Minister for Health & Children has overall responsibility for the general food labelling legislation. Responsibility for the enforcement of this legislation rests with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (F.S.A.I.). This is done through service contracts with other relevant agencies, including the Health Service Executive, the Local Authority Veterinary Service and my Department.

I am not aware of any issues in relation to enforcement of current food labelling legislation. As I have indicated previously a number of matters in relation to origin labelling and substantial transformation are of concern and have been brought to the attention of the Department of Health and Children in the context of the review at EU level of the General Labelling Directive.
