Question 78: To ask the Minister for Finance if he will make arrangements for the Office of Public Works to organise a cleaning of the river bank and river bed downstream of Ballingeary village, County Cork, at the ford, in order to prevent recurrence of recent flooding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Given the unprecedented magnitude of the rainfall in recent weeks, it is the expert opinion of the Office of Public Works that cleaning of the river bank and bed downstream of Ballingeary would not have prevented the flooding that occurred in the town.

The OPW now provides funding to Local Authorities for localised minor flood mitigation works, subject to specific economic and environmental criteria. It would be open to Cork County Council to put forward proposals for mitigation works to address the problem in Ballingeary.
