Question 202: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if there is a policy regarding the non-recognition of myasthenia gravis, MG, on the long-term illness card scheme; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that at least 500 people here suffer from this form of muscular dystrophy, which is a chronic disease characterised by fluctuating levels of muscle weakness; her plans to review the non inclusion of MG within the scheme in the near future, or plans to provide some form of relief for sufferers in view of the severity of the condition; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Muscular dystrophy is one of the conditions covered by the Long Term Illness Scheme (LTI). I am having enquiries made of the Health Service Executive (HSE) in relation to its practice in relation to applications for LTI cards from persons suffering from myasthenia gravis.

I will contact the Deputy when this information comes to hand.
