Question 245: To ask the Minister for Transport if he will investigate the possibility of establishing a cycle path from Dublin to Galway along the Grand Canal; his views on whether this could be an important tourist and commuter cycling route; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Government's National Cycle Policy Framework, which I launched in April this year, aims to develop a National Cycle Network. In this respect I have commissioned the National Roads Authority to map a potential National Cycle Network and I expect to have the results of their work in the New Year. In addition, with the intention of ensuring synergies across other public organizations, I have arranged for an advisory group under the auspices of the National Trails Office to assist the NRA in their work. Pending receipt of the Authority's work, I do not intend to make comment on elements that may form part of the route. However, I can confirm that the Authority is aware not only of the potential of the canals as cycling and walking routes but also of cycling-related works planned and in progress on the Grand Canal.
