Question 203: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government his views on the proposal in the special group on public service numbers and expenditure programme for the abolition of town councils in view of the fact that such a step would be anti-democratic and in violation of the constitutional recognition of local government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The White Paper on local government will address a broad suite of local government issues, including in relation to town government. I expect that the White Paper will be published later this year following, inter alia, consideration of local government financing in light of the Report of the Commission on Taxation and in line with the commitments in the renewed Programme for Government.
