My Department's role in relation to security at airports is to ensure the application of European and international aviation security standards to prevent civil aviation against acts of unlawful interference that jeopardise the security of civil aviation. My Department has no role in relation to the prevention of the illegal importation of goods or substances which is clearly what is at issue in this case. This is a matter for the Customs Division of the Revenue Commissioners which falls under the remit of my colleague the Minister for Finance, and An Garda Siochana.
