Question 59: To ask the Taoiseach the number of vacant civil servant or public servant positions in his Department on 1 October 2009, and in the State bodies or organisations answerable to him; the grade and average length of the vacancies; and if an application has been made to have those positions exempted from the public service recruitment and promotions embargo. In the context of the moratorium on recruitment and promotion which is being implemented across the public service there are no vacancies in my Department or any of the agencies under its aegis. Where necessary, responsibility for the work of any officers who have left since the moratorium was introduced is dealt with by way of reorganisation and restructuring of work allocations and staffing and no exemptions from the moratorium have been sought. My Department and the agencies under its aegis will continue to manage their staffing resources within the budget allocation in a manner which will ensure that priority is given to achieving the key activities and objectives of the Department.
