Question 184: To ask the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to a lone parent in receipt of the loan parent's payment from the Department of Social and Family Affairs who has applied for the third level grant but will not qualify as they are living at home with their parents whose income is more than the guidelines; the other payments available to this person; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Apart from the maintenance grants scheme and the free fees initiative, financial support is also available to students, in approved third level institutions, through the Student Assistance Fund. The objective of the Fund, is to assist students, in a sensitive and compassionate manner, who might otherwise, due to their financial circumstances, be unable to continue their third level studies. Information on the Fund is available from the Access Officer at the candidate's College.
