Question 609: To ask the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs when a stretch of canal walkway (details supplied) in Dublin 8 will be upgraded; if he will guarantee funding for this project; if he will commit to the upkeep of the Grand Canal walkways in Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by Waterways Ireland that the stretch of Grand Canal walkway referred to by the Deputy was upgraded as part of a Joint Road Enhancement Project between Waterways Ireland and Dublin City Council. The project involved the laying of asphalt surfacing and installing associated bollards and gates.
I am advised that additional works proposed for this area were to have been carried out in conjunction with a proposed Dublin City Council redevelopment project, but I understand that this project is currently on hold.
Waterways Ireland will continue to maintain the Grand Canal walkways in Dublin within the resources available.
