Question 566: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if he attended a sod turning ceremony at a college (details supplied) in County Mayo with the purpose of announcing the commencement of the building of a new sports hall; if he will confirm that, at that time, no tender had been awarded and no contract had been signed for the building in question; if he will further confirm that this is now the case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I attended a number of functions in County Mayo on 22nd April including the launch of Mayo Vocational Education Committee Active Living and Learning Initiative. While visiting with the VEC there in Castlebar I did indeed turn a sod at the site of the proposed Joe Langan Sports Hall at Davitt College. The project was out to tender at the time. My Department recently authorised County Mayo VEC to commence the process to award the contract to the preferred bidder.
