Question 280: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that persons (details supplied) who were in prison in the United Kingdom and subsequently electronically tagged until recently have been informed by the UK Probation Service that it is in order for them to return to Ireland; if he will confirm that their return will be sanctioned by the authorities here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I can advise the Deputy that there is no legislative provision in place for the statutory transfer of probation supervision between Ireland and other jurisdictions. However, from time to time, the Probation Service can and does take on the supervision of individuals from other jurisdictions. This is done on a strictly voluntary basis.

With regard to the individuals, the subject of this Parliamentary Question, the best approach would be for the UK Probation Service to make direct contact with the Director of the Probation Service, Probation Service HQ, Athlumney House, Johnstown, Navan, Co. Meath setting out all relevant details.
