Question 412: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if he will confirm that it is intended that Cork Institute of Technology will continue to provide a course in speech, drama and theatre studies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20920/09]

The Institutes of Technology are autonomous institutions and my Department does not have any function in their day to day operational affairs or in relation to decisions concerning course provision. The Institutes receive a block grant from the Higher Education Authority and it is a matter for each institution to determine how this is allocated internally across different academic programmes. However, it is my understanding that the existing education programmes in speech, drama and theatre studies in Cork Institute of Technology will continue to be offered as heretofore.
