Question 250: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, in view of the Government's commitment to encouraging community endeavour and volunteerism, he has given consideration to the legal impediment to voluntary activities due to fear of legal liability; if, in this regard legislative changes are envisaged; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Law Reform Commission published its Consultation Paper on the Civil Liability of "Good Samaritans" and Volunteers in November 2007. The Consultation Paper included provisional recommendations in relation to the standard of conduct to be expected of Good Samaritans, voluntary rescuers and other volunteers and defences against civil liability claims for such people.
I understand that the Law Reform Commission's consultation process has been completed. The Commission's final report will be published later today and I look forward to examining its final recommendations for reform of the law in this area.
