Question 195: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of people under 18 years of age who have been remanded in custody during each of the years 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 due to the lack of State psychiatric services for young people; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The position is that children are remanded to custody in a Children Detention School or St Patrick's Institution on the order of the Court when criminal charges have been made against them. While it is a matter for the judiciary to decide on the disposal of each individual case, information as to the basis for the Judge's decision is not available.
