Question 103: To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources his views on the workers in Bord na Móna who have been told the State company cannot pay their pension; if he had meetings with the management or with the unions; the discussions that took place at this meeting; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The current global economic climate has had a negative impact on pension scheme funds generally, including Bord na Móna schemes. The pension schemes and the emerging pension deficit are matters for the Board of Bord na Móna plc and the Trustees of the Pension Schemes in the first instance. Officials in my Department are in regular contact with Bord na Móna in relation to the schemes. The Department of Finance is also briefed regularly and Bord na Móna is also in discussion with the Pensions Board.

Discussions are ongoing between the company, the trustees of the scheme and the members in relation to the options available to remedy the issues arising for the pension schemes.
