Question 367: To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources his plans, in view of the introduction of smart metering by the ESB which is due to be completed by 2013, he has for the 350 approximately meter readers, some of whom have 30 to 40 years service, and who have no recourse to social welfare benefits, pensions, redundancy or other social welfare benefits; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The employment of meter readers and potential future arrangements arising from the introduction of smart metering are day-to-day operational matters for the Board and Management of ESB, as regulated by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) and not ones in which I have a function.
