As the Deputy has previously been informed, Ireland is fully supportive of efforts to bring a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Colombia.

The Government of Colombia has repeatedly stated its determination to bring an end to violence within the framework of the Justice and Peace Law, passed in 2005, which provides an overall legal framework for the demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration of illegal armed groups into Colombian society.

The Irish Government has given both moral and financial support to the implementation of the Justice and Peace Law. We believe that FARC should lay down arms now and avail of the Justice and Peace Law, thereby assisting all citizens of Colombia to enjoy the benefits of a lasting peace.

The EU has expressed its total solidarity with the Colombian people and full support for the Colombian Government in its search for a negotiated solution to the internal armed conflict. The EU has also underlined the importance it attaches to the ongoing implementation of the Justice and Peace Law.

The Irish government will continue to work with EU partners in support of these objectives. We will also continue to examine how we may, as appropriate, contribute within the UN Framework.
