The programme of replacement and refurbishment of Garda accommodation is based on agreed priorities established by An Garda Síochána who work in close cooperation with the Office of Public Works, which has the responsibility for the provision and maintenance of Garda accommodation.

I am informed by the Office of Public Works that state owned accommodation adjacent to the existing Garda Station has been allocated to An Garda Síochána approximately doubling the accommodation currently available in Athlone. Additional adjacent accommodation is also being leased to further supplement the office space available.

It is anticipated that refurbishment works to the existing and additional accommodation will commence this year with completion expected in 2010.
