Question 239: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if there are questions regarding religion and nationality of pupils on the enrolment forms for the new community national schools which are being piloted by his Department; if it is his policy to ask questions on these topics on enrolment forms for all schools here regardless of patronage model; if he will provide a copy of the enrolment form used by the community national schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The new community national schools welcome and respect children of all faiths and none. They recognise and aim to accommodate the wishes of parents to have their children receive religious education within the school day and also cater for parents who do not wish their children to receive religious education based on any one particular faith. Therefore the enrolment form for the community national schools includes questions seeking information on both religion and nationality. It is not compulsory for the parents to declare their religion or nationality when enrolling children in the schools. For operational reasons and to assist the evaluation of community national school pilot model, it is helpful to know what religions, faiths and nationalities are represented in the schools. The pilot phase provides an opportunity to test approaches to the practical issues that arise and to draw lessons from that experience that can allow the model to be developed and refined.

The matter of the admission/enrolment policy for other schools, is a matter for the board of management of each individual school, as provided for in the Education Act 1998, Section 15. A copy of the enrolment form for Scoil Choilm Community National School is set out below.
