Question 208: To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food the legislative position both domestically and at European level with regard to the obligation to detail slaughter date for poultry products on packaged poultry; if the slaughter date must be clearly presented on poultry labels; if this obligation pertains to other meat products; if he intends to bring forward amendments to legislation in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. EU marketing standards apply to the sale of poultrymeat in this country. These do not require an indication as to the slaughter dates. The same position pertains to other meats. The current marketing requirements impose various labelling requirements regarding the meat concerned and its use. An extension of these requirements to cover slaughter dates would involve a proposed amendment to EU legislation and this is not currently planned.
