Question 207: To ask the Minister for Finance his views on reallocating staff from other Government Departments and agencies to the Money Advice and Budgeting Service in an attempt to alleviate the workload currently being experienced by MABS personnel in offices here due to the economic downturn; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In the light of constraints on the public finances and the need to maximise the use of resources, it is necessary to develop appropriate redeployment mechanisms so that staff can be moved from activities which are no longer priority to areas of greater need. In my Supplementary Budget 2009 I stated that I intended to allocate and redeploy staff in the civil service to areas of highest priority.
In relation to the allocation of staff to MABS, which is not part of the civil or public sector, it is a matter for the parent Department, in consultation with my Department, to establish the priority areas in this context, the appropriate level of resources needed and how they might be provided.
