Question 35: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if the proposed public service pension levy will apply to school caretakers and school secretaries even though neither are entitled to a public service pension due to the terms and conditions they receive from his Department; his views on whether the application of the levy to the salaries of these employees would be profoundly unjust; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The public service pensions-related deduction applies to public servants working in public service bodies who contribute to a pension scheme, or who receive a payment in lieu of such a contribution. Those secretaries and caretakers who are members of a public service contributory pension scheme will be affected by the measure. However, employees who do not contribute to a pension scheme will not be affected by the public service pensions-related deduction.
