The Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources currently employs two former civil servants who are also in receipt of a Civil Service pension. In the first case the services of a former staff member of my Department are being retained on a part-time basis for which he is paid at a daily rate. Since his retirement in mid 2008 he has been paid a total of €29,721 in salary and expenses. His Civil Service pension is currently €38,764 per annum. The abatement principle was applied in setting his level of fees so as to ensure that this rate plus pension does not exceed his pre-retirement salary.
In the second case the individual concerned has been engaged by the Department since October 2008. In that time the Department has paid €11,000 for his services. This cost is shared with the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. As this individual was a career servant in another Department, this Department does not have details of his Civil Service pension, which is a matter for the Paymaster General's Office and his former Department.
