Question 356: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government his views on the proposal of the National Youth Council of Ireland to reduce the voting age to 16 for the upcoming local and European elections; the action he will take in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In accordance with electoral law, a person must be eighteen years of age or over in order to vote. This is consistent with the position in most countries, including the EU Member States. While electoral law is subject to ongoing review, there is no proposal at present to reduce the voting age in Ireland.
