Question 202: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the number of laboratories that have closed as a result of the outsourcing of smear tests; the number operating part time; the amount that was invested in these laboratories in each of the past five years; the amount that was invested in 2007 and 2008 either by way of capital expenditure in equipment or via lease arrangements for such equipment; the liability for such leases; the capital value of equipment lying idle in hospitals as a result of the decision to outsource; if the relevant staff have been reallocated to alternative useful employment; if staff have lost jobs as a result of the decision to outsource the smear tests; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The specific question raised by the Deputy relates to the management and delivery of health and personal social services, which are the responsibility of the HSE under the Health Act 2004. Accordingly, my Department has requested the Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Executive to respond directly to the Deputy in this regard.
