Question 97: To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources if, due to the Taoiseach's request, he has investigated semi-State bodies under the control of his Department, to ensure they have not abused public funds in relation to expenditure on expenses or travel on behalf of their agencies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As the Deputy will be aware expenditure by the State Agencies on travel and subsistence in relation to the conduct of their business is, subject to application of the various Department of Finance regulations in this area, a day-to-day operational issue and therefore a matter for the Agencies themselves.

In addition all expenditure by the relevant Agencies is subject to review and scrutiny by the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General.

Pursuant to the request by an Taoiseach, my Department has contacted the relevant State Agencies in relation to ensuring that the use of travel and subsistence budgets within their overall allocations complies with the existing regulations and guidelines.
