Question 159: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if a baseline health study will be carried out in Cork Harbour following the debate earlier in 2008 on the implications of possible cancer causing chemicals being released into the harbour from the former steel plant at Haulbowline; and if he will make a statement on the matter. An environmental assessment of the current status of the Haulbowline site by consultants, White Young Green, and a peer review of it have been completed. My Department is currently examining the reports and the recommendations contained within them. Once this is completed I will release the reports into the public domain, which I expect will occur early next week. I will then advise Government on the outcome and actions that may be necessary, including in regard to the question of any studies on human health.
