Question 225: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if, in view of the fact that almost 400 symphysiotomy procedures were carried out on women in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, some taking place after childbirth, she will arrange for an external review to establish the reason for this number of procedures; the outcome of these procedures generally for the women involved; the need for clarity in these unusual circumstances; and if she will make a statement on the matter. My predecessor, Minister Martin, met with the Survivors of Symphysiotomy (SOS) Group in late 2003 and agreed that a range of measures would be put in place to support the Group. I subsequently met with the Chairperson of the SOS Group in early 2007 who expressed satisfaction with regard to the progress made in this regard. My Department has asked the Health Service Executive to examine the specific issues raised regarding symphysiotomy practice at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and to reply directly to the Deputy.
