Question 347: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there are around 30 detainees who have been labelled Guantanamo's refugees (details supplied); if he has had contact with the US authorities or with lawyers for the detainees regarding their relocation to safe countries; if he would be willing to offer them refuge here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 346 and 347 together.
There have been some discussions with the US authorities regarding detainees who have been cleared for release from the facility at Guantanamo. My Department has also had informal contacts with interested parties and lawyers representing one of these detainees, the individual to whom the Deputy refers. It has been made clear to all concerned that Ireland is not contemplating the relocation here of any person in this group.
