Question 252: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if, with regard to over-70 year old medical card holders whose entitlement will continue to be valid after 1 January 2009 because their income is under the new thresholds, such persons will be expected to undergo a means test once their card expires; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I can confirm that persons aged 70 and over, who currently hold a medical card and whose income is under the new weekly income thresholds of €700 for a single person and €1,400 for a couple, effective from 1st January 2009, will not have to undergo a means test. However, should their circumstances change to a point where their weekly income would be in excess of the thresholds, they should at that time notify the change of circumstances to the Health Service Executive.
