Question 131: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the income that is considered in calculating the thresholds for qualification for a medical card for people over 70 years; if, in the case of public service pensioners it excludes the PAYE income tax which is automatically deducted from the amount paid to the pensioner; and if she will make a statement on the matter. With effect from the 1st January, 2009 the new income thresholds for entitlement to a medical card for persons aged 70 or over are €700 (gross) per week for a single person and €1,400 (gross) per week for a couple. Gross income refers to income before tax and PRSI deductions.
