The Centre for Early Childhood Development and Education was set up in 2002 for a fixed term period of 3 years. In 2005, it was sanctioned for a further 3 year period. Sanction for the Centre ended in September 2008 and the Centre was given a further 2 months fixed term contract to conclude the orderly cessation of the organisation. The CECDE was not established on a statutory basis and no legislation is required to effect its closure. During its sanctioned period of 6 years, the annual expenditure by the Centre was in the region of €1million.
