There were four vacancies in my Department's offices in Athlone on 15 October 2008. All four vacancies are being filled from the Public Appointments Service — three on Monday 3rd November 2008 and the fourth on 24th November 2008.

There were no EO vacancies in my Department's offices in Tullamore on 15 October 2008.

I have appointed one non-Civil Servant Special Adviser since I was appointed Minister for Education and Science.

Mr. Bernard Mallee was appointed as Special Adviser with press responsibilities with effect from 5th August, 2008. Mr Mallee worked outside of the Civil Service prior to this appointment. His annual salary is €86,168 which is paid to him in accordance with the Department of Finance Instructions relating to the Appointment of Special Advisers. Expenses including travelling and subsistence allowances, where applicable, are paid in accordance with normal civil service regulations.
