Question 53: To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food the communications he or his Department has had with the Minister for Finance or with officials in the Department of Finance in the past seven days regarding changes to the 1% income levy that will be charged on gross income earned by farmers up to €100,000 gross; his views on approaching the Minister for Finance with the view to introducing an exemption for this levy on up to the first €17,542 earned by farmers to bring them in line with recent measures taken for the PAYE sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have discussed the 1 per cent levy with the Minister for Finance and I understand that the farm organisations have conveyed their concerns to the Minister. The arrangements for the application of the levy will be confirmed in the forthcoming Finance Bill. My officials and I will be in further contact with the Minister for Finance and his Department in relation to a number of tax issues, including the income levy, in the context of the preparation of the Finance Bill.
