My Department, in managing its capital budget must ensure that funding is targeted at schools most in need. That is why my Department introduced prioritisation criteria for large scale building projects, which were formulated following consultation with the Education Partners in 2004.

As part of the assessment of all applications for capital funding by the Planning and Building Unit of my Department, each project is assigned a band rating under the published prioritisation criteria for large scale building projects.

Projects are then selected for inclusion in the School Building and Modernisation Programme on the basis of priority of need which is reflected in the band rating assigned to a project.

My Department has 39 applications from primary schools in County Kerry for major capital works, of which 6 are currently progressing through architectural planning on the school building and modernisation programme.

My Department has 128 applications from primary schools in County Cork for major capital works, of which 20 are currently progressing through architectural planning on the school building and modernisation programme.
