In the period referenced by the Deputy, one Agency, the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA), was established on 1 January 2007 and came under the aegis of this Department in June 2007.

It is responsible for the implementation and enforcement of National and EU Regulations on Sea Fisheries Protection and Seafood Safety.

The budget in 2007 for the SFPA was €10.95 million with an allocation of €14.07 million in respect of 2008. The total staff number of the SFPA is 107.
