Question 209: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if EEA nationals must be given preference over non-EEA nationals when competing for positions as medical or surgical interns in the health service; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [30037/08]

The recruitment of interns is governed by European Community Preference rules and priority must therefore be granted to applicants who are nationals of the EEA Member States ahead of applicants who are nationals of third countries. I am advised by my colleague, the Minister for Health and Children, that this requirement is being implemented by the Health Service Executive and the employing hospitals concerned.
