Question 256: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the position regarding a person (details supplied) in County Cork who has been told that their application under the housing aid for the elderly scheme can not be considered due to financial constraints on the scheme in view of the fact that they themselves and their spouse are both old age pensioners. The administration of the Housing Aid for Older People Scheme, including the prioritisation, processing and approval of individual applications, is a matter for individual local authorities and one in which my Department has no direct function.
My Department made a combined capital allocation to all local authorities on 21 May for the operation of the Housing Adaptation Grant Schemes for Older People and People with a Disability in private houses in 2008. The schemes are funded by 80% recoupment available from my Department, together with 20% contribution from the resources of the local authority. It is a matter for each local authority to decide on the level of funding to be provided for the Housing Aid for Older People Scheme, from within the combined allocation notified to them and to manage the operation of the scheme from within this allocation.
