Question 127: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if he will take steps to review a decision by his Department not to grant a special needs assistant to a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath despite the fact that all the professional reports indicated that this person would need the help of an SNA for a period of time; if he will ensure that the decision is reversed and the SNA granted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As the Deputy may be aware, the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) is responsible, through its network of local Special Educational Needs Organisers (SENOs), for allocating resource teachers and special needs assistants to schools to support children with special needs.

All schools have the names and contact details of their local SENO. Parents may also contact their local SENO directly to discuss their child's special educational needs, using the contact details available on www.ncse.ie.

I have arranged for the details supplied by the Deputy to be forwarded to the NCSE for their attention and direct reply.
