Question 169: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the overcrowded conditions at a school (details supplied) in County Galway, the efforts being made by the board of management, the teachers and parents in this school to have a new school built, the exorbitant cost of the two prefabs on the site which are costing over €90,000 for the school year 2008, that the prefabs will cost over €20,000 in rent each year thereafter, and that due to the lack of accommodation another two prefabs will have to be made available at a similar cost; when he proposes to have the new school commenced; and if he will make a statement on the matter. An application from the school referred to by the Deputy for a large scale building project has been assessed in accordance with my Department's published prioritisation criteria for large scale projects.
Following on from a technical visit by officials of my Department the Patron has confirmed the availability of additional lands for a new school building. Further progression of this proposed project will be considered in the context of my Department's multi annual School Building and Modernisation Programme.
