Question 150: To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will request the European Commission to publish a price series on retail wholesale processor and producer prices for each Member State on the Internet every three months in order to ensure more price transparency within the European pigmeat sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Producer prices in each Member State are collated by the Commission and are already in the public domain. Transparency in the area of producer prices is highly desirable and is an important tool in the management of the common organisation of the pigmeat market. Prices at later stages of the marketing chain do not have that same function and are dependent on many variable factors such as consumer preference, sales taxes, and the nature of the supply chain.
