Question 246: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if consideration has been given to highlighting road speed cameras or traffic control vans as is the case in other jurisdictions arising from which it appears to achieve a greater compliance with speed limits; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that both overt and covert enforcement of the speed limits in force are perceived as resulting in positive outcomes. Overt enforcement includes increasing the visibility of cameras and vehicles used. The Garda authorities are aware of practice in other jurisdictions. Which approach is used in particular circumstances is a matter for decision at the operational level by An Garda Síochána in line with policing policy.

The Garda authorities use both overt and covert approaches as they consider appropriate.
