Question 637: To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources his policy on the future of the post office; if he has identified the optimum number of post offices expected to form the mainstay of the service in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter. It is Government policy that An Post remains a strong and viable company into the future, in a position to compete in a liberalised market, provide a high quality, nationwide postal service and maintain a nationwide, customer-focussed network of post offices. Matters and decisions relating to the future of the post office and the optimum number of post offices are, in the first instance, for the board and management of the company and ones in which I have no statutory function.
