Question 610: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will again stress to the Garda Commissioner the need for additional Gardaí to be assigned to Tallaght Garda Station, Dublin 24; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Tallaght is the third largest population centre here and has particular needs in that regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have been informed by the Garda Commissioner that the personnel strength of Tallaght Garda Station as at 31 March 2008, the latest date for which figures are readily available, was 179. The Deputy will appreciate that, as with any large organisation, on any given day, personnel strengths of individual stations may fluctuate due, for example, to promotions, retirements and transfers etc.
It is the responsibility of the Garda Commissioner to allocate personnel throughout the Force taking everything into account. In doing this he takes into account all relevant factors, including of course population but also including other factors such as crime rates and trends as well as operational priorities. The situation will be kept under review and when additional personnel next become available the allocation of Gardaí to Tallaght Garda Station will be fully considered by the Commissioner within the overall context of the needs of Garda stations throughout the country.
