Question 223: To ask the Minister for Transport the way he proposes to ensure that a functioning system of driving instruction will be in place after the deadline in nine months time, in view of the fact that discussions between the Road Safety Authority and driving instructors are ongoing and there is no certainty regarding the rules that driving instructors will have to adhere to after that time. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has given me comprehensive proposals for the registration and regulation of driving instructors, with the target date of 1 January 2009. These are under consideration, with a view to making the necessary Regulations. In the meantime, the RSA has arrangements in hand to permit existing driving instructors to demonstrate that they already meet the qualification requirements for registration as approved driving instructors.
