Question 208: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if she has plans to ban smoking in cars in which children under 16 are being transported in view of the fact that passive smoking is particularly harmful to children and evidence which shows that passive smoke can reach high levels in motor cars; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I have no proposals to introduce a ban on smoking in cars in which children under 16 years of age are being transported but I will keep the matter under review. The harmful effects of exposure to cigarette smoke are well known as is the fact that such exposure is particularly dangerous in enclosed spaces (including motor cars). Parents and others with responsibility for the welfare of children have a particular responsibility to ensure that such exposure does not take place.
