Question 499: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if the Fitzmaurice Castle on the Castle Green Grounds in Ballybunion is in State ownership or protection; if restoration work is planned on the castle; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10487/08]

I understand that Fitzmaurice Castle on the Castle Green Grounds in Ballybunion is a recorded monument (KE 004 -031) and that it is in the ownership of Kerry County Council. The question of restoration works is a matter in the first instance for the Council to whom queries should be addressed directly. My Department administers an annual Civic Structures Conservation Grant Scheme to assist in the restoration and conservation of buildings of significant architectural heritage merit and which are in public ownership or open to the public generally. The deadline in 2008 for completed applications was 15 February. It remains open to the Local Authority to prepare a proposal for the 2009 scheme in due course.
