Question 653: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of non-EEA nationals registered with GNIB as being resident in the State; the number of these people who have student visas; the number who are recognised refugees; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The number of non-EEA nationals registered with the Garda National Immigration Bureau as being resident in the State is 138,232 (to 14th February, 2008) and comprises the following categories:

those with the status of registered

awaiting payment to register

registration renewed

awaiting payment to renew registration

those naturalised.

The number of non-EEA nationals registered with GNIB who have student visas is:

28,765 on 'Stamp 2', which entitles a non-EEA national to work 20 hours a week while studying; and

2,497 on 'Stamp 2A', which does not entitle a non-EEA national to work while studying.

The total number of non-EEA nationals who have been granted refugee status, between 1st January, 2001 and 31st January, 2008 is 7,490.
